Roger’s discussion with The Professor is drowned out by the engines on a nearby TWA Lockheed Constellation.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Now, look,” says Roger. “You started this decoy business without me – – you finish it without me!”<\/p>\n

“Well, we might have, if you hadn’t stumbled into it,” says The Professor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I think you ought to give me a medal and a very long vacation, instead of asking me to go on, being a target,” says Roger, “just so that your special agent, or whatever you call him, doesn’t get shot at.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Oh, not shot at,” replies The Professor, “Found out. Once found out, they’re as good as dead. Thanks to you, clouds of suspicion are already forming.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Thanks to me?” asks Roger.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“If you’ll get on the plane…” says The Professor.<\/p>\n

“Now, wait a minute,” says Roger. “You listen to me: I’m an advertising man, not a red herring. I’ve got a job, a secretary, a mother, two ex-wives, and several bartenders dependent on me. And I don’t intend to disappoint them all by getting myself slightly killed. The answer is no.”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Is that final?” asks The Professor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Yes,” says Roger.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Well, goodbye then,” says The Professor, shaking Roger’s hand.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Goodbye,” replies Roger.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“If I thought there was any chance in changing your mind, I’d talk about Miss Kendall,” says The Professor.\u00a0<\/p>\n
