Roger scrambles up the side of the structure supporting Vandamm’s deck.\u00a0 He pokes his head up to the level of the window to listen in.<\/p>\n

“There’s nothing to worry about,” says Vandamm to Eve.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“I just lost my head!” says Eve.<\/p>\n

“I’m not just saying this to make you feel better,” says Vndamm. “I mean it!”<\/p>\n

“Well, I just didn’t know what I was doing,” says Eve.<\/p>\n

“He wanted to destroy you,” says Vandamm. “You had to protect yourself.”<\/p>\n

“But not endanger you!” replies Eve.<\/p>\n

“Rubbish!” says Vandamm, his arm on Eve’s shoulder. “Soon, we will be off together, and I shall dedicate myself to your happiness.” He turns to Leonard. “What’s the situation, Leonard?”<\/p>\n

“About the plane, you mean?” asks Leonard.<\/p>\n

“Well, of course,” says Vandamm. “What’s the last report?”<\/p>\n

“Over Whitestone at six thousand, descending,” replies Leonard.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vandamm looks at his watch, “What, ten minutes,hmm?”\u00a0<\/p>\n

“At the most,” says Leonard. “And now, uh, I wonder if I might have a few words of parting with you, sir?”<\/p>\n

“Certainly,” says Vandamm, looking at Eve.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“In private?” asks Leonard.<\/p>\n

“I’ll go up and get my things,” says Eve. Roger watches her leave.\u00a0<\/p>\n

“Well, Leonard,” say VanDamm, “how does one say goodbye to one’s right arm?”<\/p>\n
